Life at Monash
I was reading Lim Kit Siang's Blog and came up on the post "UM the "Best University In Malaysia"?" (The bottom line is it SUCKS). Quite interesting, pretty much summarizes some of the feelings I previously had at APIIT.
Well I am already into my third week at Monash, and have noticed a dramatic increase in quality. Well duh if your paying more of course. Maybe it is just the small class between 8-20 people, but anyways there appears to be a certain level of obedience in the class that I would only witness a few times at APIIT.
Every week I have an assignment to do, that reinforces the topic being taught (one suggestion I made to APIIT). What I find interesting is that I believe these weekly assignments are alot more difficult than the only and class assignment I received in APIIT. Though APIIT recommends self study, its only a suggestion, not taken highly. Seems to me that it is forced in Monash, or maybe I'm just joining in through Advance Standing and have to catch up with what they previously did.
I have to admit though the class overall are abit more difficult, or is it tedious? Lots more reading, (Will I do it or not?).
My only complaints so far? Monash University needs some more places to sit down and chill. We have: Canteen, Library (can someone really chill there?), Computer Labs (not exactly a good place to chill).
Looks like I will actually have a challenge here. Anyways wish me luck as I continue through Monash University.
Is this the University life I wanted? Well its a start...
Oh yeah, expect me to grow back my pony tail. ![]()
How many roads must a man walk down?
I have good news, which I guess you don't often hear, partly could be because I'm a (depressing|emo) person. Well I finally, (Yes for god sakes! FINALLY), got accepted into Monash after sending my completed application in the middle of March. The bad news? I'm already enrolled into the 2nd year of APIIT and have paid the fees (including registration) for the first semester. If I join Monash, I would join the first year, second semester, thus losing (supposedly) 6 months. But I would say more like a year as my first year, second sem began in July of last year. Monash classes begin in July, and my APIIT classes would not have ended yet, so I would have to pull out of the sem with only a few weeks remaining.
BTW, I still haven't made a decision yet. Have to discuss with my parents, I hope they will let me, though I am worried that the fees are approximately 2x more expensive than APIIT. My next case of worry is would this be a case of "Out of the frying pan, and into the fire". In other words, would the education be the same? If it is, then, I would say a resounding NO. I'll take a presumption and judging from the comments from my peers, the education level may be the same. Who knows?
The two main questions I guess are:
- Is it really worth the extra money?
- Can I get the money?
I just hope if I do get in, that I do well, and score the scholarships. Lots of thoughts of all the possibliites are running through my head.
Btw, its 42.
First Year Results
My first year results are out, and not to bad. Alot better than what I had in highschool, and got myself a "First Class Honours". gasp. Then again I don't believe in grades, so thats another matter. Don't know yet if I can/will transfer to another college yet. Don't exactly see the benefits right now, if the level of education in .my colleges are crap. Thought it would give the opportunity to have fun in college at least.
Been at OpenGL still, but its moving slowly, abit slower than I had expected, and I want. Partly because I've been extremely lazy lately. Don't really have anything to show anyone right now, except for a few spinning objects and stuff. Overall I find the OpenGL API quite simple actually, but at the same time there is alot of depth into it.
I've also been doing research into Game Programming and am starting to see that it's alot harder that it looks. But what makes it interesting is that a few gaming consoles are using OpenGL, for its graphics. Then again alot of this stuff is just random browsing through Wikipedia, Google, and Yahoo!. Can't verify the authenticity of it, but hey, it makes me happy, so why not?
Because I was doing OpenGL, I though I would look at the XGL/AIGLX code while I was at it, so I downloaded the code, and well...didn't really know where to begin. Same goes with other sources I have downloaded, Linux, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, OpenOffice, Xorg. The big projects are quite, well big. I want to get involved but not sure where to dip my toe. Maybe a smaller project, but which one?
I am a bit dissapointed though as I'm not seeing much progress in OpenGL, then again I am to blame for that.
Was talking to a friend about FOSS, and he was saying its like a full time job ... maybe I should look into doing something else?
