Is Size Everything?

I was brought up to this article 'Microsoft to power halal industry ICT system' by Yoon Kit.

Ok...keyword: Microsoft, lets continue.

The system, to be called the Malaysian International Halal Hub Open XML System, will be based on the Open XML document standard, according to Microsoft Malaysia general manager Yasmin Mahmood.
...
However, Yasmin said, Microsoft is keen to get the Halal Hub project going as soon as is practical.

My take, they want an OpenXML implementation as soon as possible as it'll look good in their book.

"We went with Microsoft as a partner for this project because it is the largest software company in the world and it has the resources to help make the project a success," he (HDC chairman Tan Seri Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim) said.

Not a smart choice. Just because they are 'big' doesn't meet it equates to the best choice. Windows Vista is just taking off, and it is littered with problems. Not including the long delay. If you want, forget the software, but internally as well. Just Google it up.

Bill Gates may go around and say "We've sold 40 million licenses". But I bet that take into account licenses sold by OEM, through Laptops and normal machines. And people are buying more machines now than they did when Windows XP was released.

On a side note, can the FOSS capacity in Malaysia provide better services?

Or am I just paranoid?

Microsoft capturing the Hearts of House Wives

Actually it's single mums, but alot of people who evangelize FOSS want everyone to use it, and usually as a measure of success indicate that if "house wives" use it, we would have won.

But it looks like Microsoft has captured the hearts of Single mums.

THE first batch of 22 students from the Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) Section 17 IT Community Centre received their certificates recently (April 14).

The E-homemakers education programme is sponsored by Microsoft Malaysia and provides participants with skills on using various Microsoft applications like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power Point.

Readers may notice an increasing number of posts centered on Microsoft. Why? It's just to show you much Microsoft is contributing back into Malaysia.

Have I converted into a Microsoftie? No. But sadly our financial budget may not be as big as theirs are.

And yes, I know am generating a lot of hot air right now.

Better Internet Explorer compatibility: Microsoft Joins OpenAjax Alliance

Sadly, Microsoft didn't pull a 180 and joined the OpenDocument Format Alliance. Instead they joined the OpenAjax Alliance (site), which should be good news to many developers.

What do I expect out of this? I hope better adherence to standards! Comon Microsoft, with some of the best (and worsts of) brains out there you should be able to follow standards.

This is really good news, especially with the increasing interest in Ajax. Some people say its the way of the future. The browser is the new desktop. Though I wouldn't agree yet, I do recognize that you can do some amazingly cool things.

For simple (and even some very complex things), you don't need Flash anymore, period.

Some questions:

  • Will Microsoft update versions of IE 5 and above to adhere, or will it only update v7?
  • Will Microsoft try to wrestle for control in the OpenAjax Alliance?
