Some Expectations I Ask Myself

Here are some expectations I ask myself:

  • Do you feel duty bound?
  • Do you feel the need to change the world?
  • Do you feel the need to save the world?
  • Do you feel the need to right the wrongs?
  • Do you feel you are a problem looking for a solution?
  • Do you feel you are destined for greater things?

Relationships

  • Do you feel the need to make your parents happy?
  • Do you feel a duty to your parents?
  • Do you feel the need to make your family happy?
  • Do you feel a duty to your family?
  • Do you feel the need to make your friends happy?
  • Do you feel a duty to your friends?

What expectations do you have of me? What expectations do you have of yourself?

3 Months

Three months is a great time period.

It is a great time period in terms of:

  • Duration, and
  • Frequency

Duration

I like my projects durations to be a maximum of three month. Anything longer than, I find painful. Hence I would break it down into multiple three month phases.

A project that is six months or more is too long, and slow for me. I like to see progress. A project that is a year long is even more saddening. Its depressing working on a project that you have invested a years worth of your time that sees no progress to benefiting you.

Thats why I like three month durations. I like to see progress. I like to measure, analyze, and act upon my findings after the three months. This allows me to move forward.

Frequency

The frequency of three months, is neither too frequent and at the same time not too infrequent.

It is four times a year, and thus happens every quarter.

There is enough distance, and at the same time not too far.

Yeah, you should get the point by now. I find the frequency of every three months great.

Somethings you should do every three months:

  • Measure, Analyze, and Act
  • Reward Yourself

Measure, Analyze, and Act

The frequency of three months, allows you to see the progress of how things are coming along. Whether or not somethings are not as beneficial to you as you hoped it to be. Whether to make a change in direction.

Upon being able to analyze, you can make decisions to choose which best course of action to take.

Companies have quarterly reports, why can't people have one for themselves?

Reward Yourself

I feel every three months you should reward yourself for the past quarters worth of work you've done. Doesn't matter the amount of work, the difficulty, or the lack there of. You should reward yourself still.

Reward yourself, by spending some of your money, but spend as much that is relative to your income.

How can you reward yourself?

  • Purchase big ticket items, ie: gadgets, laptops, and or car
  • Fancy dinner with loved ones

The Importance of Communication

Note: These are my thoughts and opinions, and will generally be developed through time as I see fit. I post it here for others to develop their own thoughts. Any inconsistencies in my opinions merely means I have not updated older posts.

Communication is the key to the success of any relationship, be it business or personal. The success of your business and personal relationships can greatly aid in your success. But don't forget, you define what it means to be successful. No man is an island, and we will all rely upon another person in life. Hence it is important to develop your communication skills.

Why is Communication Important?

Communication is required to manage the expectations of others, and yourself. When expectations are mismanaged and not met, generally everyone involved is unhappy.

It is important to communicate with each other, what you need, and what you want.

Similarly, it is important to communicate with yourself, with what you need and what you want.

Having Good Communication

Having good communication, ensures that someone gets the most value out of what you have to say. It is about getting the point across in the least amount of words.

Quality Communication

What defines quality?

Electronic engineers would define it as the Signal to Noise Ratio ( SNR ). This can described as when a person speaks to you, of what the person is saying how much is relevant, how much is applicable, and how much is useful.

The more useful the information, the higher Signal to Noise ratio.

The less useful, the lower the Signal to Noise Ratio.

But sometimes, its not what is said, but what is not said that is important.

Improving Communciation

Don't expect others to figure out what you are thinking.

Avoid Assumptions

Ask questions, Avoid Assumptions.

Speak Your Opinion

Be honest, don't rely on the other person to read between the lines

Admit Your Mistakes

Drop your pride, Admit your mistakes. You are afraid to communicate with the other person because of your own fears. Your fears about the persons possible opinion of you.
