The Charter For Compassion is now up:

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others - even our enemies - is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings, even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

Participating in the Malaysian Chapter of the Charter for Compassion

On the morning of Sunday 1st November 2009, I had mysteriously woken up early in the morning. A highly strange occurrence, especially on the weekend. Breaking out into my normal morning routines, I whipped out my laptop and noticed Hakim online.

I began chatting with Hakim, and he invited me for the Malaysian Chapter of the Charter for Compassion Casting Call, no talent required. I thought it was worth a visit, considering I had wanted to break into the voice acting scene! Why don't I try my luck?

Now I saw the site a few days ago, but didn't pay much attention to it. Even after visiting Hakim's blog, I didn't research much into it. To be honest, I really didn't know what I was getting myself into.

The Charter for Compassion

The website describes it as:

The Charter will proclaim a principle embraced by every faith, and by every moral code. It is often referred to as The Golden Rule.

The Golden Rule requires that we use empathy -- moral imagination -- to put ourselves in others' shoes. We should act toward them as we would want them to act toward us. We should refuse, under any circumstance, to carry out actions which would cause them harm.

Now this resonates with me. I've always told people that they can do whatever they feel like doing, as long as they don't cause harm to others.

Filming for the Malaysian Chapter of the Charter for Compassion

While the schedule stated it was going to begin at 11am, I knew I was going to be late. I had arrived around noon, and felt a bit hungry. I noticed a next door mamak, and went there to perhaps grab some breakfast. I saw a crowd there, and thought they were here for the filming. I even recognized a familiar face, but couldn't put a name to it. I gave breakfast a second thought, and thought it would be best to check out the studio first.

Upon entering Tell Media Studio, it was apparent they weren't ready. I was told that the talent were hanging around the next door mamak. So I was correct about them. I proceeded to bounce back to the mamak, and introduce myself. I did recognize someone, except I didn't have a name for him. He was Ija Mohan (@SpicyGuy), and I had met him at the first Social Media Club Kuala Lumpur gathering at P1s headquarters. We started chatting, I got my breakfast, than he and the rest of the people went to the studio to began filming.

I om nom nom nomed, and then Hakim made his appearance.

One by one, we slowly made our shots.
