Figures have show than unemployment is the highest in IT graduates , at least in the UK…but I think many people involved in IT would say the same is for Malaysia.
More worrying for the IT industry is the decline in the number of students wanting to study IT. The level of students applying for computer science degrees has halved in the last five years, leaving a shortfall in new entrants needed each year, according to Hecsu.
This is at least true for Monash Malaysia, the IT faculty here is very small, and my intake very tiny. Has people lost interest in IT after the Dot-com bubble of 2000?
But with the increasing popularity of social networking, will this reflect a renewed interest in IT?
A problem with the Figures is they do not state the main cause for the large reason of unemployment. At least in Malaysia it is regarded as lack of skill sets. How about the reason for the decline in students applying for IT degrees?
I’ve just finished watching The Corporation, a very indepth documentary on corporations. Though I perceived I knew a reasonable deal of the information, it was presented in solid clear message which really hits you. Bottom line, if you are into politics, freedom, psychology, relationships, then this documentary is for you. Loved it, and found it great and amazing. Just go watch it. Best of all it’s free for download from an official torrent.

My involvement in several activities throughout the past year has been a real eye opener for me, in witnessing how corporations, no matter how big and small play a very important pivotal role in life. This documentary helped to solidify a lot of curiosities about the relationships between corporations, governments, and relationships that I’ve been pondering about.
Though the overall conclusion of most present corporations perceived by the documentary is that they are essentially evil, it is difficult to accept as corporations provides services which we are indebted to. This includes computers, food, etc.
Without IBM, Intel, and many other companies it would difficult for me to be typing this post at the moment. But it is corporations lack of moral and ethical judgment, and their interest in profits. It may be inevitable to avoid supporting such corporations, things will come into a cost and benefit analysis. Choosing the lesser of the two evils, that can accomplish your work. Perhaps using the services that they provide against them, characterized by Michael Moore in the documentary as the Greed Flaw.
I have no problems with people getting rich. But when that money, is essentially dirty money taken from plundering the lands, well then. I do have a problem. When income disparity is a large problem for many.
The movie makes another important point in that consumers, should get involved in the actions of a corporation to change its ways, such that the next generation is not taxed by the damages the company has caused through externalities.
The site also provides a lot of nice additional resources, which you can look into. These includes links, transcripts, study guides (great for schools), and more.
On the side I have been reading Lawrence Lessig’s The Code v2, a freely available Creative Commons Licensed, and how some correlations in the area of government and corporation relationships between The Corporation and The Code can be drawn up. Perhaps once I’m done reading it, I’ll draw up something.

Wow, what a week! Talk about alot of releases from famous FOSS projects. The Firefox finally got their 2.0 release, the Fedora Team has brought along another fantastic release with Fedora Core 6. Last not but not least on everyones tongue is the release of Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft.
So here I am eagerly waiting for the download to complete for Ubuntu 6.10. I wonder what the rest of the week will bring us?
