Apple’s namechange, and the iPhone

Apple's iPhone

Well the words out on the street and the infamous Apple Computers, is now just the infamous and highly popular Apple.

Under intense secrecy (isn’t that what Apple likes to do?) Apple just recently announced the iPhone, and I have to admit it does look like one sexy gadget. The phone appears to be all about integration, which some people would argue, Apple does best. So the phone integrates with email, calendar (iCal), contacts (Address Book), iTunes, and just about everything Apple. So can it integrate with non Apple applications?

Now there are a few things I am curious about.

First of all, can you develop for it? Since its built on MacOSX (supposedly, I hope they didn’t just throw the name on it), I can install python, ruby, etc easily on it. I wonder if you can develop on it, and thats the only thing I don’t like about mobile phones now adays, I know you can develope J2ME applications and some s60 phones you can use python, but there isn’t enough of these phones going around (at a cheap price also) that I can pick up. By develop, I mean for your local home developers, aka ME. Now I’m not saying the iPhone is cheap, I mean at the cheapest is at a staggering 500 USD, but hell I’d just love to toy around with it. What hackers do best.

Does the phone come with a SIP client, or VOIP application? You know, Skype. If you can develop applications for it, I don’t see why not. But does it come with one by default?

I wonder when Linux will be installed on it.

I wonder when I’ll get one. Anyone want to purchase it for me as a present :P?

With how Apple has intimidated and supposedly created innovation in the music industry though the iPod and iTunes, I hope that Nokia, Motorola, and all the other cell phone companies are now threatened by the presence of the new a player. A player which has won the mind sets of the public. Though they own zero market share of the cell phone market right now, the perception of Apple by the general public will help Apple’s position. Similarly they had zero market share in the portable music devices, and Internet music downloads. But look at them now. A real name to be reckoned with.

With the cell phone companies threatened, maybe we might see more innovation, and more functionality in the low end phones. Just maybe…

New competition is good, especially in a stagnant market.
