A Visit to the Satria Neo Club.net
February 10th, 2007 by aizatto
Last night, I was with the Satria Neo Club.net (SNC) (yes the .net is quite important), as my friend was a member, and invited me to tag along. Thought it would be an interesting, so I didn’t mind, plus its good to meet different people.
Like the MyOSS community, they are a bunch of good people, come, join in, talk, makan, cakap cakap, in a normal Malaysian mamak session. Yum, yum. It was easy to notice the same demographics of people, the quiet ones, the hardcore ones, the new ones, the (fill in the blank) ones, etc…
But it’s interesting though, as there is a larger number of participants in the club. Whats the reason? Is it because vehicles are something tangible while software isn’t? Also perhaps they are more down to earth, also more realistic, while (at least myself) we fight for software freedom. Perhaps if we discussed the technical, economical, (etc) merits of FOSS, we could get more people. But I thought the Meetups were already technical, some would say ‘too technical’.
People who come for the MyOSS Meetups, are generally software developers, or server administrators, or philanthropists. Whereas the SNC can reach all range of life, perhaps our scope is just limited.
Also being a Satria Neo Club, the chances of the people having rides to places is quite high. Since chances are they would want to show off their (un)modded vehicles at the spot, thus transport is more or so guaranteed.
With a vehicle, you can do something tangible. Take drives around, go on trips, etc.
With software, its a bit more difficult. You can have coding marathons.
Sadly the former seems more interesting.
The types of activities that FOSS can offer is limited in scope, or maybe I need to think of some new ideas.
Similarly I joined in on one of their futsal sessions, which gathered quite a large group of people, unlike our MyOSS Basketball sessions. Different sport perhaps?
Seeing the excitement of the community, the energy, the whole thing. Its really a great feeling. Something which has been dying in the MyOSS community.
I feel like reviving the MyOSS community again, and with a few responses to my inquiry for assistance, I am still unsure how to carry forward.
On a side note, even SNC has girl members!
