I’ve been waiting for an official announcement from the Creative Commons Malaysia team, but here it is. On a side note, they have update their web page. I think it looks a lot nicer.

On a side note, the registration has opened up, so do sign up! Though I don’t know what you’d get.

Licensed Under the Creative Commons By Attribution

Creative Commons

This is just a reminder that this blog is licensed under the Creative Commons By Attribution. Also from now on I’ll be using the latest v3.0 of the license as well.

Creative Commons (CC)Creative Comons (BY)

This is just one of the ways to advocate the Creative Commons.
Similarly the various presentations I have given are also licensed under the Creative Commons, all under By Attribution. With oldest one being licensed to at least v2.0.

But that shouldn’t matter. My intention is so that you use/build off my work.

If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.

I may not be a giant, but you get the point…

Off Topic: Interestingly enough Wikipedia has some history on that metaphor.

Creative Commons Malaysia Photography Workshop co organized by Lensa Malaysia

Creative Commons Workshop Co Organized with Lensa Malaysia

As many of you know, how big a Creative Commons fan I am. Thus I decided to attend the workshop to ‘network’ with people. Similarly I expected to see some MyOSS people there (yes I know some of you are photographers), but sadly none turned up.

Now I’m not a photographer per se, in fact I don’t have my own personal camera. What I do have is my new Nokia e61i, which btw is also a camera phone. Sexy. But I wanted to attend nonetheless, just to see Creative Commons crowd in Malaysia.

There was a good turnout with around 100 people, which is not so bad. Just to let you know, everyone brought their cameras. I only see me and someone else using their phone to take pictures :).

Koi Fish

At one point, there was a like an hour long photography session, where I got the chance to experiment with the camera. Looking at the photo’s now, I can judge where the focus point of the camera is, as most of my up close images are blurry.

Throughout the day I used the e61i to connect to the Internet, do some mail, do some stuff, nothing big. Though at one point it hung the Messaging application when opening a SMS message… had to restart the phone.

Creative Commons Malaysia

I think it was a weak event for the Creative Commons Malaysia. But strong for Lensa Malaysia. It seems like the event was organized more for the Lensa Malaysia than the Creative Comons.

Dr. Ng Alina’s presentation about the Creative Commons Malaysia was not also strong. She also played the Get Creative and Reticulum Rex videos. Which got me to think I should store these on my phone, so that I don’t have to lecture the person about the Creative Commons. Just let them watch the film. They are both good videos, and get the point across very nicely. My only nitpick is that in the first video, the tagline ‘????’ doesn’t sound nice at all.

Maybe it could be the orientation of the day, being targeted towards photography enthusaists.

But the Creative Commons made a smart decision with the Creative Commons pins. People will take pictures of people with the pins. Good marketing.

Curious I asked Dr. Ng Alina about:

  • the adoption of version 3 of the Creative Commons in Malaysia
  • the adoption of the Science Commons in Malaysia
  • the adoption of Creative Commons licensed materials in Educational institutions

Basically the answer to all three lie in an event in upcoming June event. From which CC.my will decide how to procede. I’m guessing the June even is the iCommons.

There was no emphasis on the outcome of any of the photographs taken during the event. I suggested that they should release photos taken during the day under one of the Creative Commons license at least. Let them decide. Similarly to encode each image taken with metadata about the Creative Commons license they use.

Creative Commons Swag

In the end I got alot of Creative Commons swag. Pins, coasters, and a mouse pad.

No not all those in the pictures, just one, two, or three of each one.

Can the Free and Open Source Society Malaysia work with Creative Commons Malaysia? Yes we can.
