As Malaysia enters its 52nd year of independence, its sad to see that people are still discussing the issue of unity. The word on people’s lips now a days is 1Malaysia. Now, many people aren’t even familiar with what 1Malaysia means, but the common theme seems to be “unity”. Unification of the races.

But as we closely approach Merdeka, examples of dissent or disloyalty start showing face. There has been recent case of protesters threatening bloodshed over Hindu temple (via The Malaysian Insider):

A group of Malay-Muslim protesters claiming to be residents of Section 23 have threatened bloodshed unless the state government stopped the construction of a Hindu Temple.

I am appalled by such an act, and everyone should.

I like to constantly remind people:

Do not confuse dissent with disloyalty.

Example

A leader receives criticism from one of his advisors for a decision the leader made. The advisor believes that the action the leader has committed, would result in undesired consequences. The leader staunchly refuses to believe his advisor, and accuses him of being disloyal to him for not acting out on his decision.

Is it dissent or disloyalty?

In my opinion, if the advisor wants the best for the leader, then it is only dissent. It is only disloyalty when he puts himself first.

Dissent

We all want the best for Malaysia. We all have different opinions on how the country should be. We all love to leave criticism on its shortcomings and successes. But we all still want the best for Malaysia.

Even though you may hear grieving, and calls for change, we all still want the best for Malaysia. We just have different opinions on whats best for our country.

Disloyalty

When the actions you take, will benefit no one but yourself.

One of my biggest peeves is seeing people throw trash on to the street. Nothing is to be gained from that except your own instant satisfaction of cleansing oneself. The environment suffers. People suffer. Everyone suffers.

Your Opinoins

So is the act of threatening bloodshed, an act of dissent? Or an act of disloyalty?

What do you consider dissent or disloyalty?

It seems that Najib wants the 1Malaysia logo to be used by everyone.

Via Bernama:

The 1Malaysia logo is expected to be widely used by ministries and local companies to signify the support for the 1Malaysia concept and principles behind the “People First, Performance Now” ideals.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said many may have already noticed that in the past month or more, many nationally-recognised local companies had introduced into their advertising campaigns, a logo, very similar to the 1Malaysia logo, which can see be seen on his 1Malaysia website.

On quick inspection, the 1Malaysia website does not contain a usable logo for me to use. In fact its quite difficult for me to find the logo.

Usually a website will contain a Press or Public Relations section that is easily accessible, where the Press, Bloggers, people can easily find a set of media to use. This includes press releases, images, logos, and usually the set of restrictions on how these logos can be used.

For example, Apple has a Public Relations page where I can easily find high resolution images of their products.

Mozilla also does an amazing job on providing users with a large set of high resolution Firefox images.

Using the search engine on the 1Malaysia website to search for “1Malaysia logo” or “logo”, provides so many results, in an unattractive and difficult to use interface. Why didn’t they just stick Google Search on the website?

Jumping to my favorite search engine, I googled for “1Malaysia Logo”, I got a hit for “1Malaysia Logo Guideline”. It only provided PDFs for the 1Malaysia Logo Corporate Identity and 1Malaysia Logo Colour Sample. But not even the real logo. Fail.

How did I find the logo I’m using? Google Image Search. They even managed to find me an Adobe Illustrator format on Brands of the World.

Update:
Here are some other places you can find the logo, generated by the public:

Google Image Search: 1malaysia logo

Brands of the World ( Adobe Illustrator )

A: 1Malaysia.com.my is the personal website of Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak. … Continue reading →

Lucky for me, there was an FAQ.

Q: What is 1Malaysia.com.my?
A: 1Malaysia.com.my is the personal website of Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak.

Wait. What?

I’ve seen more and more ads containing the 1Malaysia logo. I’ve seen 1Malaysia posters littering the highway. I’ve seen it all over the place.

But, in the end, it seems that they are all promoting Najib’s personal website. Are they blindly supporting 1Malaysia without knowing what it means and stands for?

To be honest, I’m not even sure what 1Malaysia means and stands for, and the website doesn’t help in educating me.

Q: Is this a government website?
A: Although the site discusses issues regarding government policies, it is a personal website and not run by any ministry or government agency.

So by promoting 1Malaysia, you aren’t even promoting the Government. You are promoting Najib.

I’ve asked around about what people thought 1Malaysia was about. The common theme was unity. But in general, it seems people just aren’t sure.

Via Merdeka Center (PDF) ( Local Mirror – PDF ):

76% of the public were aware of Najib‟s “1Malaysia” concept with 23% broadly saying
that “it promotes unity between the various races” and 18% saying it “is about fairness
and equality among the races”. 39% of respondents however did not understand about the
concept. The survey found that 46% of respondents were confident that1Malaysia would
be able to achieve its goals.

I’m confused. To me there is a disconnect. Is the idea of 1Malaysia, and the purpose of the website two different things?

By labeling the 1Malaysia website as a “personal website”, I feel that all meaning that Najib is trying to push is lost, especially after seeing the logo everywhere. I feel that whenever I see the 1Malaysia logo, it is now only praise to him. Najib has to be greater than himself.

I fail to see the purpose of the site. Except to keep track of Najib’s online presence, and to praise him.

Self praise is no praise.

With the launch of 15Malaysia, I’ve been monitoring people’s interaction with the website. The most basic interaction involves simply visiting the website. The next level of interaction involves, leaving comments on the website. Following that, they would publicize it on their own websites or social networks, thus further funneling visitors to 15malaysia.com.

What am I monitoring for? Well just mentions of the website: 15Malaysia’s online presence.

Presently I am monitoring:

Site Comments

15Malaysia Facebook Page Comments

Twitter

Blogosphere

Internet

Some of the tools I’ve used to monitor traffic to 15malaysia include:

Google Alerts

Google Analytics

Google Blog Search

Twitter Search

Not only do I do monitoring, I am also interacting with people where possible.

Do you have any recommendations?
