Perhaps because it was a low end R series model? With 1 year warranty, and its already been 2+ years. :P . Plus I carry mine with my _every where_ I go, its like an extra limb to me. Maybe I should have gotten a T series previously.

After all, you can still have Ubuntu(or any other FOSS OS) on it while enjoying the nice cat (no matter tiger or leopard or kitty cat :P) how come your thinkpad died? i suppose thinkpad should survive at least 3 years to 5 years right? i have now 3 thinkpads at home and the oldest (the faithful t20) is at least 5 years old, and still running 24x7 as a server. if new thinkpad is within consideration, get a T series - usually more robust and solid. i would say if the price is not much different, perhaps the MacBook would be a good choice.
