Leopard vs Gutsy Gibbon
October 5th, 2007 by aizatto
So with my laptop in the state of no return, I have been pondering what my next machine will be. Of course a machine would be empty without its operating system!
Repairs alone would cost more than 1700 MYR, so rather than dumping that money on an old machine, I thought I’d invest in a new one. I’ve been looking around the market, but my eyes have been fixated on the low end Macbook. I don’t really need Apple hardware, but after comparing it with the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads, that are currently available, the Macbook provides a better bang for the buck!
What are the extra benefits of getting a Macbook? Leopard! (well soonish, its only Tiger for now)
Rumors have it that Apple is just about to release (somewhere around October 26) their update to their operating system, dubbed Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard, featuring more bling. Meanwhile the Ubuntu community have also been hard at work on their next version 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, to be released on October 18th!
Sure I could just buy the Apple hardware and dump Ubuntu on it, but Mac OSX is oh so blingy, though Ubuntu is also very blingy with Compiz!
So my options?
- Wait till the end of October, or beginning of November to get Leopard preloaded on a Macbook
- Get the Macbook now and load Leopard (or whatever comes next) later
- Purchase a non Apple laptop, and use Ubuntu
Perhaps someone would like to donate me a laptop? It will most definitely make me decide on my next operating system. Please.
Or perhaps I should just consider another brand…Dell, HP? Any recommendations? Definitely not Acer though.

Dude.. Which laptop died? The Thinkpad? Or something else? WHat happened to it anyway? If it’s the thinkpad, I’m sure it’s not older than my current DELL which as you know, has given me multitudes of problems.
So.. if you want to get another thinkpad, I suggest you get them from either the States or in Singapore. I bought my other half’s X60 from .sg for like close to 2K rm cheaper.
See here.. shoponline.com.sg for some prices of the T61 series.. (also ~

Hey. Since you’re big on Rails, I suggest getting said Macbook. Once you try out TextMate, you won’t go back
Linux on “new” laptops that you’re going to buy, will just not make you happy. Gutsy will probably work well on my over-6-month old laptop, but don’t expect it to shine on new hardware. Frustrations will ensue, I’m sure
Get it with Tiger now, I’m sure the Leopard upgrade is cheap/free for those customers that have bought things since say, May or something of this year
And if you still need Linux (you will!), there’s Bootcamp (but really, why futz?!?) or Parallels/VMware - virtualisation is the way to go.

i would say if the price is not much different, perhaps the MacBook would be a good choice. After all, you can still have Ubuntu(or any other FOSS OS) on it while enjoying the nice cat (no matter tiger or leopard or kitty cat :P)
how come your thinkpad died? i suppose thinkpad should survive at least 3 years to 5 years right? i have now 3 thinkpads at home and the oldest (the faithful t20) is at least 5 years old, and still running 24×7 as a server.
if new thinkpad is within consideration, get a T series - usually more robust and solid.

@lotso
My Thinkpad died, the board is acting up :(. Wow, but the prices are still expensive. Thanks for the tip though.
@colin
Thanks for reminding me
Ah thats true, forgot about issues with new laptops
@wahlau
. Plus I carry mine with my _every where_ I go, its like an extra limb to me. Maybe I should have gotten a T series previously.
Perhaps because it was a low end R series model? With 1 year warranty, and its already been 2+ years.
