A Continuing Promise: “Better Broadband”
March 21st, 2007 by aizatto
Once again we have reassurance that “Better Broadband” is on the horizon. So it seems like two heavyweights, Telekom Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and Verizon Business will work together towards an Internet Protocol Hub in Cyberjaya, which should be ready by June.
As taken from the site, the benefits are:
- faster connections among local ISPs (Internet service providers)
- lower broadband costs
- more reliable international connections
Sounds like the same marketing garbage we constantly get.
The more interesting part about the article, the plan to launch a 4Mbps broadband package. How much is this going to cost? If its similar to the cost of the 2Mbps (double the cost of the 1Mbps), the no way. Especially with the traffic shaping in the background.
The article highlights the desire to increase content creators in Malaysia. But content is no more limited to port 80 (that’s the World Wide Web for you non-tech savy folks).
Lets be realistic here, people are resorting and using BitTorrent for both legal and illegal things. Its a double edge sword, but if TM decides to shape traffic, they are also blocking a legitimate service.
With increasing file sizes for media and games, BitTorrent is a solution that many are going to. Game companies such as Blizzard and Valve rely on BitTorrent for their bandwidth needs.
Here are my set of questions, this round:
- When will the real thing arrive?
- Or are users never satisfied?
- Will WiMAX be the solution?
